The brainchild of Mexican-born-and-raised Ruben and Maricela Alvarez, Backyard Taco has been a carne and pollo asada staple in Mesa since 2012. With four locations between Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert, the taco shop — now owned by Steve Beck and Tyler Robison — will soon open two new locations in Mesa and Queen Creek.

Both new locations are set to open next year, at 24842 South Ellsworth Road in Queen Creek, and on the northwest corner of Signal Butte and US 60 in Mesa as part of the 60 & development.

Like all of Backyard Taco’s locations, the new spots will feature charcoal-fired mesquite wood grills, tile floors, and drive-thrus, which the restaurant plans to incorporate into all its locations moving forward. The Signal Butte spot will come equipped with a large, covered patio, while the Queen Creek restaurant will feature lots of wooden accents — a reflection of the town’s agricultural community.

“We like to embrace the character of the neighborhood and incorporate that into the design of the restaurant,” says Director of Construction Development Russell Beck. “At the same time, we want to celebrate the history of the restaurant and the culture of the people who founded it.”

In addition to killer tacos and friendly service, Backyard Taco also partners with the schools in its communities, and regularly runs fundraisers to donate a portion of its proceeds to local schools. It’s just an all-around good place, that cares about its community, its history, and of course, its food. So pile on the charcoal-grilled meats and cilantro, we’re here for all the Backyard Taco locations we can get.
