A brand new sushi concept will be coming to the Mission District in late October this year.
Co-owners Tan Truong and Geoffrey Lee recently applied for a liquor license at 598 Guerrero Street, the previous home of the now-shuttered AL’s Deli. The partners are the same team behind the Michelin-star-rated Ju-Ni, and have been dreaming of this project ever since they first started Ju-Ni together.
The new concept, The Handroll Project, is expected to be a more casual alternative to the prestigious Ju-Ni, and will feature hand-rolled cones of seaweed stuffed with fresh fish and rice. Referred to as temaki sushi in Japanese, the Handroll Project will be a quick and efficient way to bring top-quality sushi to a much wider audience.
Ju-Ni means “twelve” in Japanese, and the restaurant is named so because the entire experience centers around only 12 seats. Their sushi bar is designed in an extremely specific way that ensures that every 4 guests will get their own personal chef to craft a custom dining adventure. Known for serving omakase, a chef’s-choice platter that allows the chef to fully control the experience, Ju-Ni has become legendary in the Bay Area for their meticulous attention to detail.
But for Mission District locals who have been unable to score a reservation at the premium sushi spot, chefs Truong and Lee are offering an exciting new alternative. Their new Handroll Project will be the perfect partner to Ju-Ni, serving premium temaki sushi to busy locals on the go.
The handrolls are fast, healthy, and delicious and if Ju-Ni’s success is anything to go by, people will soon be lining up around the block to get a bite of what The Handroll Project has to offer. Expect The Handroll Project to be coming to 598 Guerrero Street this October.
