A brand new dessert is making its to San Francisco all the way from the East Coast, and we haven’t really seen anything like it before. Kash Daddy’s is a brand new dessert shop opening up on 1051 Market Street, and it promises to be the first store in San Francisco to sell authentic “Baltimore Snowballs.”

What is a Baltimore Snowball? Great question! Baltimore Snowballs are an evolution of the standard snow cone and Hawaiian ice. While traditional snow cones are made from crushed ice, where the syrup usually all drains to the bottom, Baltimore Snowballs are made with finely shaved ice that actually allows the syrup to penetrate the ball and imbue it with flavor. Many Snowballs also include a special layer of whipped marshmallow and egg custard, adding a critical component of creaminess to the sweet treat.

Owned by Mateo Richardson, Kash Daddy’s derives its name from a very personal story. Mateo and his wife Kristine recently had a baby boy last year and named him Kash. Unfortunately, Kash’s birth coincided with a severe financial downturn brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and the new parents soon found themselves without a permanent home and a newborn baby to take care of. Moving between various hotels and shelters, the couple resolved to start the business they had always talked about. It was from this conversation that Kash Daddy’s was born, in honor of their new son and the legacy they wished to leave for him.

While Snowballs have been a staple in Baltimore for decades, they remain relatively unknown across the rest of the nation. Snow cones may seem ubiquitous across summer events, but their improved Baltimore cousin has been difficult to find – until now.

Replacing The Flying Falafel which previously operated at the location, Kash Daddy’s will bring authentic Baltimore desserts home to San Francisco for the first time. You can follow them on Facebook, where they just announced a Grand Opening Party on October 5th. Get there early enough and you may become the first person in the Bay Area to try a Baltimore Snowball. You might even be able to meet little Kash himself!
