If you were saddened by the recent news that Ahimsa Garden closed the doors to its location at 265 East 10th Street, cheer up! According to a recent Instagram post from the restaurant, Ahimsa Garden is simply moving uptown to a brand new location at 204 East 38th Street.
Ahimsa Garden is a popular vegetarian Indian restaurant that has operated in the East Village for years. Founded by Frank Shah, the restaurant is a tribute to the plant-based recipes that have fueled the Indian culinary tradition for millennia.
Ahimsa is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “Strike simply.” Essentially, Ahimsa is the spiritual practice of active nonviolence – going out of your way to to ensure that you do no harm to a single living soul (including animals). A critical element of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions, the practice of Ahimsa has left an indelible mark on the generally vegetarian culinary traditions of the region.
Ranked as one of Manhattan’s favorite vegetarian restaurants, Ahimsa Garden practices nonviolence as an act of love for its patrons. Nourishing guests with generational plant-based recipes from India, Ahimsa Garden brings an essence of home with every plate they serve.
While the restaurant previously operated at at 265 East Street, Frank and the team at Ahimsa Garden are moving the operation uptown to a brand new location at 204 East 38th Street. That location was previously home to Sons of Thunder, a poke bowl restaurant that also offered burgers and shakes. Sadly, Sons of Thunder shuttered its doors during the pandemic and it the moment it does not appear that there are plans in place to move the restaurant elsewhere. Thankfully, Ahimsa Garden is an exciting new tenant that will bring a lot of energy to the space. Look forward to Ahimsa Garden opening on 38th Street in December.
