When Café Amelie closed in 2022, New Orleanians lost access to the property’s famous Princess of Monaco Courtyard, one of the city’s crown jewels. It appears that a new restaurant is preparing to replace the café and reopen the famous courtyard for diners once again.
Former Café Amelie chef Jerry Mixon is making preparations to open The Royal Courtyard Bar and Bistro at 912 Royal St. According to the official website for the planned restaurant, The Royal will offer a modern take on “Southern Louisiana cuisine, courtyard inspired beverages and celebratory atmosphere.” What Now New Orleans has contacted Mixon for more details, but he has declined to provide any for the time being. An opening date has not been announced.
Popular with locals, tourists, and visiting celebrities, Café Amelie closed in 2022 after a 17-year run. In addition to al fresco dining in its famous courtyard, the cafe also had indoor dining inside its historic carriage house.
