The rumors might actually be true: Costco is opening a new store in San Jose. What Now San Francisco has obtained real estate intel that suggests a deal has been finalized for the big box wholesaler to take over 5281 Prospect Road at the Westgate West shopping center.
Our tip also notes that Costco will move into the 166,058 square-foot retail space at the start of 2023. Based on this information, it’s likely that Costco will need to undergo a huge buildout in preparation for a debut next year.
Representatives for Costco have been contacted but have not returned requests for comment at the time of publication. If indeed we see this new Costco location come to fruition, it will be met with mixed reactions by those who reside in the neighborhood.
San Jose Spotlight got wind of this rumor late last year, prompting a debate among locals as to whether or not a Costco is the best choice for the neighborhood. While many locals are worried about it causing even more traffic and ousting existing businesses in the area, others are excited about the possibility of having a Costco closer to where they live.
City officials, for one, are optimistic about “the value Costco provides to the community in terms of convenience, tax revenue, strengthening [their] retail base,” according to San Jose Vice Mayor Chappie Jones. The proposal for this Costco included plans to build a rooftop parking lot for the store. There are currently five Costco locations in San Jose, plus many more in the surrounding cities.
