The beloved Starbucks coffee chain is looking to add two new locations in San Pedro, one under construction and another pending approval from the Los Angeles City Planning Department.
The first location, coming to San Pedro’s Garden Village Shopping Center, will move into the former U.S Bank building at 28100 S. Western Ave., according to The Daily Breeze. The shopping plaza already has two Starbucks, making this the only one with a drive-through. Construction for this location is already underway. The other proposed site, also with a drive-through, will sit in the Target parking lot at 1701 N. Gaffey St., pending approval. The company already has a location within that Target.
Currently, there are eight Starbucks in San Pedro, and four of them have drive-throughs. This comes as part of a massive expansion effort from the Seattle coffee chain. Although the Garden Village location has already been approved, there is no guarantee for the other site coming to Northwest San Pedro. The company proposed a new drive-through location on Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach but was turned down due to traffic concerns. Now, they are looking to add a new location in Manhattan Beach at the former Jack in the Box property.
Despite the company going through a wave of unionization attempts throughout the country, Starbucks is still thriving. In the first quarter of this fiscal year, the company has opened 484 net new stores. In the same amount of time, the company brought in $8.1 billion in revenue, according to an earnings report, representing 19 percent growth compared to the same period last fiscal year.
“Our brand is stronger and more resilient than ever,” Starbucks President and CEO Kevin Johnson said in that report, “and we remain confident in the long-term outlook as we navigate the future of Starbucks together.”
