A business license has been approved by the city of Berkeley for a Grateful Bread location at 707 Heinz Ave A. The location is near Aquatic Park, the used furniture store Berkeley Outlet, and an art gallery, Artworks Foundry.

According to the Grateful Bread website, the business was founded in 1990 by Joe and Dianna Artim “with the mission to bring authentic artisan bread to Sacramento.” Over the next 27 years, the Artims expanded the business and in 2017 it was acquired by Dave Pringle and Sonny Mayugba.

Grateful Bread specializes in sourdough, selling it in batards, baguettes, rounds, and sliced for sandwiches, along with multigrain and toasted walnut varieties. Some flavor options include Rosemary French Sea Salt and Country French. They don’t use preservatives and many of the breads are vegan and contain zero sugar, using only local honey as a sweetener. The website states, “We are committed to producing sustainable, non-GMO products and always strive to use as few ingredients as possible.”

It is unclear for what purpose the building will be used. In addition to producing and distributing bread to be sold by vendors, the business also operates a bakery called The Original Grateful Bread. It’s located in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center and is described as an “unassuming bakeshop featuring a variety of handmade breads, plus cinnamon rolls and cookies.” According to the Facebook page, they also serve pretzels, pumpkin bread, and almond horseshoes.

The bakery’s hours are from 9 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and from 10 am to 6 pm on Sunday.

An opening date has not yet been announced.
