Plant-based restaurant Freya’s Diner closed its 2462 Central Avenue location on August 6, citing a difficult and slow summer season, according to recent coverage by St. Pete Rising. Replacing it is Proper Meats, a sandwich shop from James Knight, one of the culinary minds behind Dr. BBQ.
The menu will include a selection of “Knuckle Busters,” the coverage tells us—meaning overstuffed brioche sandwiches like the Ybor Hot Byrd, the Sticky Pig, the Grrrrilla Cheese, and the Tex Reubenstein. There will also be vegan choices, including an Impossible burger and a vegetarian pita sandwich called the PETA.
What Now reached out to James Knight on Tuesday to inquire about plans from Proper Meats. Knight was not immediately available for comment.
Opening in the former Freya’s space, Proper Meats joins the Grand Central District’s highly developed culinary community, with nearby restaurants including Valhalla Bakery, Lost & Found, the Floribbean, and Salty Nun.
