Otherwise Brewing, an entirely gluten-free brewery based in the Bay Area, is opening a brick-and-mortar taproom in Lower Nob Hill — taking over a space that is currently home to Barley, a craft beer bar and restaurant at 1038 Polk Street

Co-owners Aaron Gervais and Stellar Cassidy share in a recent press release that they are “teaming up” with Barley’s owner, Erik Anderson.

In addition to manufacturing and selling “a wide range of small-batch brews,” Otherwise Brewing will offer a gluten-free menu. It hasn’t been finalized just yet, but Gervais tells What Now San Francisco, “We’d like to find a way to tie into the legacy of the existing menu in some form,” meaning patrons should continue to be able to enjoy melt sandwiches à la Barley, minus the gluten.

Concerning the taproom’s opening, Gervais shares, “We expect it to be in the early summer since there are very few modifications that need to be made to the space. We just need to finalize some agreements and licensing issues, then do a gluten-removing deep clean and set up a small nano brewing system.”

In the meantime, Barley will continue to run operations as usual.
