Crooked City, a cider-centric taphouse located at 206 Broadway in Oakland, has been purchased by its former sub-tenant, Hesher’s Pizza.
Hesher’s owner, Zak McCune, tells What Now San Francisco that Hesher’s Pizza and Taproom will operate very similarly to Crooked City, and describes intended renovations to the space as “slight aesthetic changes.”
While remaining cider-centric, he shares that Hesher’s Pizza and Taproom plans to add beer to its “ever-changing tap list,” as well as canned and bottled beverages for customers who want to grab drinks to take home.
Additionally, the pizza menu will be expanded to include more experimental options, such as “The Confusing Luau,” “The Reverend Bizarre,” and “The Hinterlander” — which are still a mystery in terms of toppings, but definitely sound promising.
McCune says that he founded Hesher’s as a celebration of “the thrash metal history of the Bay Area.” While a sub-tenant at Crooked, the eatery offered band pizza specials and sold band merch.
Going forward, he plans to remain “interlocked with the music community” in Oakland, and for the space to continue to be community-oriented in general — hosting trivia nights and comedy showcases weekly, events with the Oakland art library monthly, and organizing an ongoing pinball league.
Hesher’s Pizza and Taproom at 206 Broadway is now open.
