Sugar’s Home Plate, an Overton favorite for American hearty American fare, sports, and a relaxed good time for more than 30 years, has been closed for a few years now, since it was sold, but Overton hasn’t forgotten Sugar’s.
“The valley really loved that restaurant, it was a town staple. The owner were getting a bit older and wanted to retire, so they sold it, and since then everybody has been missing Sugar’s. That home feeling, the cooking,” Bernie, an Overton local with a plan to bring back of piece of Sugar’s to the area, told What Now on Saturday. “So we decided to make a spin off.”
Called Salt’s, the new, veteran-owned restaurant will open about two blocks away from old home of Sugar’s, launching at 150 N Moapa Valley Boulevard. Bernie says it will offer the same comfortable environment, serving up American classics, several of which—including the Chicken Fried Steak, Judy’s Hash, and the Steak & Eggs Combo—are made from recipes handed down by Sugar’s owner Judy Metz herself.
“[Judy] even helped me create the name,” Bernie said. “When I told her that it was a spinoff, she said, ‘That’s so cool. How about ‘Salt’s’? With a touch of Sugar’s.”
Salt’s will seat about 80 guests, opening near the intersection with West Thomas Avenue.
