Ess-a-Bagel has signed a lease at 115 Broadway.
The cafe, which currently has three locations throughout the city, is targeting a spring 2025 opening date, CEO and owner Melanie Frost told What Now New York.
“It’s a great location. It’s right in the heart of the Financial District,” Frost said. “I think we’ve gotten a lot of interest in it.”
The new spot will offer catering, pickup and retail. Frost said the menu will be somewhat condensed and streamlined, but there will be an expansion on the coffee menu.
Ess-a-Bagel is known for its hand-rolled bagels. It also serves salads, meats, cream cheese spreads, cakes, pastries, muffins and cookies. The bagel spot serves espresso beverages, as well.
Florence and Gene Wilpon and Aaron Wenzelberg opened Ess-a-Bagel in 1976 on First Avenue in Gramercy Station.
“Coming from an Austrian baking family, the art of baking or crafting the perfect bagel came naturally to them,” the Ess-a-Bagel website states. “Within two years of opening, Ess-a-Bagel was voted No. 1 in the Tri-State area, and had attracted a loyal following.”
They expanded to another location on Third Avenue in 1993. Now, Frost has continued to grow the brand. Ess-a-Bagel now has locations on First Avenue, West 32nd Street and Third Avenue.
Frost said the new location in the Financial District is part of a larger expansion in both their retail and wholesale markets. They have opened up a manufacturing facility to support their wholesale growth, and they have a West Palm Beach location coming in 2025.
