Known as a veritable “Cheeseteak Empire,” Charleys Cheesesteaks has 787 locations currently in operation in 49 states and territories. Of all these states, Florida is second only two Texas in its number of Charleys locations, with 108 stores (Texas has 133).
Charleys will be especially familiar to Walmart shoppers, as the brand frequently opens locations inside Walmart Supercenters. And that appears to be the case with a new Charleys that submitted plan review documents show opening in Hialeah, at 5851 NW 177th Street: The address is that of the Walmart Supercenter near the Shops at Palm Lakes shopping mall.
The cheesesteak empire has a storied past:
“Charleys Philly Steaks founder and CEO Charley Shin tasted his first Philly Cheesesteak back in 1985 while attending The Ohio State University,” says the Charleys website. “As a young undergrad with an appetite for success, Shin knew he wanted to share this sandwich experience with others in a big way. After experimenting with countless ingredients and perfecting his recipe, Shin turned his entrepreneurial dreams into reality in 1986 when he opened his first restaurant called Charley’s Steakery, a 450-square foot space near The Ohio State University campus. With the support of his mother, Charley’s Steakery became an instant hit with college students who craved the made-fresh Philly Cheesesteaks, loaded Gourmet Fries and all-natural Lemonades.”
