According to Oakland public records, there is pending zoning clearance at the corner space on 4150 Piedmont Ave. for a new store called Ebi Sushi To Go. While the owner declined to comment, they did confirm they are in the process of due diligence with the city in order to move forward with their plans.

The public record notes that Ebi Sushi To Go will specialize in takeout sushi and Japanese snacks. The space will have no dine-in seating. Timing suggests they will be ready to open in early 2022.

The space previously was home to Oakland institution, Gaylord’s Caffe Espresso, which unfortunately had to shut down early in 2020 due to the rise of the pandemic. Reports note that the ensuing shelter-in-place orders caused “unprecedented financial impact on the business.” Many Oakland locals felt this was a huge loss to the neighborhood, but hopefully Ebi Sushi will prove to be a welcome change.
