The Covid-19 pandemic has taken down its fair share of beloved Bay Area institutions, and many thought that The Old Clamhouse was one of them. Thankfully, this isn’t the case. Signs have gone up in the windows at 299 Bayshore Blvd. claiming that they will be “Opening Soon!”
“Soon” is actually right around the corner, as the plan is the welcome back guests in May, according to San Francisco Chronicle. The Old Clamhouse has been sold to the Florese family, who own North Beach’s Mona Lisa Restaurant.
“I went to see it, and wow. I was so impressed with it: the memorabilia, the history, that I said, ‘we have to reopen this.’ It’s the oldest restaurant, it’s in the same place. [It] makes you feel like you’re back in time,” Filomena Florese told the Chronicle.
With that in mind, the Floreses don’t plan to make any major changes to this historic restaurant, which was established in 1861. To this day, it is the oldest San Francisco restaurant that still operates at its original location.
Under the Floreses’ ownership, they will continue to serve The Old Clamhouse’s classics such as clam bake cioppino, steamed clams, and even shots of hot clam juice. But the menu will be refreshed with family favorite Italian dishes, given the Floreses’ Italian background.
