Masa Ramen Bistro is one of the newest restaurants to crop up in downtown Berkeley. Next time you’re there, look out for it at 1923 University Ave. in between Cyclebar and Trader Joe’s. The city of Berkeley recently approved a Zoning Certificate Business License for the restaurant, while a sign has gone up stating that they are coming soon.

Representatives for Masa Ramen Bistro could not be reached for comment to confirm an opening. The restaurant specializes in Hakata-style Tonkotsu Ramen and Hawaiian speciality dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a comforting bowl of hot soup or some hearty Loco Moco, Masa Ramen Bistro has you covered.

They will be taking over the former Plearn Thai restaurant, which was a go-to spot for locals who enjoyed Plearn’s curries and Pad Thai. In recent years, many Yelpers noted that service and food quality was hit or miss, but were still saddened to discover that Plearn Thai permanently closed in 2021.

Masa Ramen Bistro now has a certain void to fill, so hopefully they will be able to establish the same reputation in the area. An opening is likely right around the corner, given that their details are already up on Google and that they are poised to offer online ordering. Stay tuned.
