Bakery and bread wholesaler Bread By Johnny has been offering Jupiter fresh-baked bread since November 2018, and as that location’s sixth anniversary approaches, the local bakery is preparing to expand to West Palm Beach, launching a new bakery location four times the size of its original Jupiter home.

“I’e been in the farmers markets since 2011,” Johnny VanCora, who owns Bread by Johnny, told What Now on Wednesday. After launching its brick-and-mortar location in 2018, the bakery weathered the difficult COVID-19 years, succeeding even as wholesale customers, particularly restaurants, were shut down.

“We were very fortunate,” VanCora said. “We have a lot of grassroots community support; we try to have a great customer service experience. We made an effort to make people feel connected and less alone, and so we got a bit busier in our retail counter and made up for our losses on the restaurant side.”

Bread by Johnny gets all its whole grain flour from a mill in upstate New York. The flour is used within a month (at most) of arriving, VanCora says. “It’s more nutritious and more flavorful; it never oxidizes.”

Bread is made daily with sourdough starter and raw local honey (never sugar), and that’s not going to change as the brand grows. “We’re working to keep the soul and the integrity of the product even as we scale up.”
