Popbar, the “traditional Italian gelateria with a twist of modern dessert fun” with locations throughout the U.S. and in Canada and Portugal, is preparing to make its debut in the South Florida market.

Six Popbar locations are currently in the works for the market, beginning with Popbar’s imminent debut at Wynwood Jungle, to be followed by another location in Fort Lauderdale launching in the next 4-6 months.

What Now spoke on Friday with Gene, one of the franchisees bringing Popbar to South Florida. For Gene and his partners, the whole store began with the quality of the product.

“I don’t like ice cream, really. It’s not my go-to treat or dessert, but [my partners] said, we’ve got something for you try. It was a coconut gelato bar covered with hazelnuts, and it tasted almost like a piña colada, with this amazing coconut texture. Honestly, I kind of tuned out from the outside world for a minute. I tasted it, and I said, ‘What is that? Where did you get that?”

And with that, the idea to bring Popbar to the South Florida market was born. Launching first in Wynwood Jungle, Popbar has plans to serve everyone in the community, not to be simply a tourist-facing concept.

“We want to bring these flavors to the people of South Florida. We’re very competitive about that. We do everything we can do our production with lowest costs and highest quality ingredients so that we can maintain the business and make it as affordable as possible.”

Each of Popbar’s treats are freshly made, on-site with fresh, high quality ingredients, Gene adds.

“It’s all-natural, high-end gelato made in 25 house flavors. It’s gelato, sorbet, froyo, shakes, and lemonade, too—with all those recipes developed and perfect in Italy. All made on equipment imported from Italy too.”
