A James Beard award-winning baker is getting ready to expand his business, Barrio Bread, into Gilbert, with a satellite cafe coming to 932 N Colorado St.

Celebrated Tucson baker Don Guerra will expand his operations into the Hayden Flour Mills site starting September 2023, according to the Phoenix New Times. Barrio Bread will be open only on Tuesdays, where customers can pick up delicious bread that was once only available in Tempe. The new facility will also house their mill, customer pick-up, warehouse, and offices. Customers can reserve orders online and pick them up the following Tuesday. Guerra opened Barrio Bread in 2009 after working at several Flagstaff bakeries.

This partnership comes after years of Guerra supporting and using Hayden products. The celebrity chef even has a signature flour blend with the mill. Now, while working within the Hayden Flour Mills, Guerra expects to bake up to 300 loaves every week, according to the Tucson Foodie. Barrio Bread will also offer delicious sourdough and baguettes, as well as their newly launched “Sonoran-style” bagel, created with Chompie’s Neal Borenstein.

“It’s a great opportunity to be one door away from the mill, which is, for me, a dream come true,” Guerra tells Phoenix New Times. “It’s going to be fun to be back in my baker clothes, floured up and greeting people. For me to go back (to baking), I’m so excited to have that creativity … That’s going to be really energizing for me to get back into the bread and get dirty and make something beautiful.”
