Established in 1989, Southern Classic Chicken is a regional fast food chain that has built its brand on exceptional service, reasonable prices, and, of course, fried chicken. The property at 4603 Johnson St. in Lafayette is poised to become a new location for the fried chicken chain, according to paperwork filed with the Lafayette Consolidated Government.
Southern Classic Chicken has been in Northern Louisiana for some time, and the popular fast-food restaurant is known for its long drive-thru lines. There is also walk-up service and the food does tend to come out relatively quickly. Prices vary from location to location, but the cost of a meal typically ranges from $5 to $10, depending on the type of meat.
Restauranteur Jesse Fontenot has asked to rezone the property so he can develop it and establish a Southern Classic Chicken location. If the Lafayette zoning commission approves the rezoning, the property would likely close in March so construction could begin. If all goes according to plan, the new Southern Classic Chicken location will open in mid-2024.
In partnership with his wife Amanda, Fontenot currently owns three Fat Pat’s Bar & Grill locations. The couple had announced plans to bring two Southern Classic Chicken locations to Lafayette a couple of years back. They have not announced information about a second location.
