The Broadside is known for drawing people with music and cultural events, but the event venue at 600 N Broad St. might start to draw a different crowd with a unique tavern concept set to take over the bar space this fall.
Called Nikkei, the new bar concept draws inspiration from Japanese taverns called izakayas, but the food will include a melting pot of influences, including Japanese, Creole, and South American cuisines. Dishes on the preliminary menu posted to the official website include Japanese-style fried chicken, ceviche, and something called Doria Creole — Japanese-Italian comfort food made with rice, tomato-pepper sauce, shrimp, and Havarti cheese.
While Nikkei will be attached to the Broadside as its indoor bar, it will be open to the public as an independent restaurant, according to NOLA.com. Dinner service will be available Tuesday through Sunday.
