A brand new cookie shop called Sugar Cookie Shorty is getting ready to open its doors for the first time in Hernando, MS, located at 5305 Waikiki Cv.
Company co-owner LaNita Scott recently announced she and her husband are getting ready to open their home-baked cookie business on September 4 as a cottage food operation, according to Hernando Happenings Facebook. As a cottage food operation, the eatery will not be subject to Mississippi’s food safety regulations but will follow all safe food handling guidelines outlined in the Retail Food Code. Most sugar cookies have a vanilla flavor with vanilla royal icing.
“I have been a self-taught home-baker for over thirty years,” Scott said on the company’s website. “My husband, Anthony, is my biggest supporter, and together we have decided to open our own cookie business. We are very close to being empty-nesters, with only one of five children left at home. We are now expecting our 7th grandchild, so this Nonnie (that’s me) needs a fun way to supplement our income while doing something I love ~ making cookies!”
Customers can expect wedding cakes, old-fashioned desserts, and, most importantly, decorated sugar cookies made with her own recipes. The company has three sugar cookie and icing flavors, with more being tested. When the cookie shop opens next month, there will be strawberry sugar cookies with strawberry/vanilla royal icing, lemon zest sugar cookies with lemon/vanilla royal icing, and almond sugar cookies with vanilla/almond royal icing. Additionally, Sugar Cookie Shorty has icing flavors such as vanilla/rose and champagne. Homemade chocolate chip cookies will always be on the menu. For those who want to make cookies at home, the company offers a themed cookie kit for any occasion.
“My love of baking started with cakes and cupcakes,” Scott said. “I make all the birthday cakes and even some wedding cakes for our family and extended family. I soon realized that transporting cookies is so much easier than cakes. I have always been kind of “famous” for my chocolate chip cookies, so I decided to try decorating sugar cookies. After many failed attempts, and buying loads of equipment and cookie cutters, I have not only learned the art of decorating cookies, but I have created three distinct sugar cookie recipes that have been tested and flavor approved.”
