A major discount supermarket chain is considering a new location in MemphisMedical District.

According to documents filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development on Wednesday, May 29, a new 27,000-square-foot ALDI is headed just east of Downtown Memphis at 785 Union Ave, in the former Office Depot space.

The Batavia, Illinois-based grocery giant currently boasts more than 2,000 stores nationwide, a dozen of which are in the Greater Memphis area alone. In March, ALDI announced ambitious plans to add 800 more stores to its portfolio over the next five years.

Priding itself on being a “no frills” grocery store, ALDI is known for its private-label brands. Earlier this month, the chain revealed that it would reduce prices on over 250 items in the store.

What Now Memphis has reached out to an ALDI representative for comment and is currently awaiting a response.
