A brand new quick-serve drive-up restaurant called Taco Mesita is making its debut in Tustin, located at 765 El Camino Real.

The new restaurant was initially supposed to open in Old Towne Orange in Spring 2022. Now, owner Ivan Calderon, who also founded Taco Mesa, Taco Rosa, and Taco Mesa Tortilleria Orgánica & Café, has applied for a liquor license for the new restaurant, suggesting they are getting closer to opening. A recent update from Tustin’s Planning Commission suggests the remodel is anticipated to commence within the coming months. Taco Mesita will move into the former stand-alone home of Alberta’s Mexican Food.

Chef Ivan Calderon, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico City, opened his first Taco Mesa over 30 years ago and continues to push the boundaries of Mexican restaurants. All of his restaurant’s feature takes on the Mexico City fare he experienced in his childhood. The new Taco Mesita will focus on slow-cooked dishes in a quick-service environment, similar to how many busy parents prepare dinner for the family.

Delicious food isn’t the only thing Chef Calderon brings to the table. Calderon has been recognized for his dedication to the community. He is currently a board member of Save Our Youth in Costa Mesa and is on the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Calderon has received numerous awards and recognitions for such civic endeavors, such as The Costa Mesa Mayor’s award, The OC Register’s annual Holiday Spirit award, and the Child Guidance Center Philanthropic Spirit award.
