Swedish Chef Marcus Jernmark Bringing Nordic Cuisine to LA with Two Concepts

Lielle will replace Bicyclette in early 2025, followed by a replacement for Manzke

After returning to Los Angeles in 2022, Swedish chef Marcus Jernmark is preparing to launch two new concepts in Los Angeles, located at 9575 W. Pico Blvd.

The prestigious chef will start by opening Lielle, named after the chef’s daughter, in late Spring 2025 in the former home of Bicyclette, which closed earlier this year. Jernmark hopes to open a restaurant with ingredients from California but that maintains a “Nordic backbone and DNA,” according to the Los Angeles Times. While the menu is still in development, Jernmark hopes this concept will help rejuvenate the once-popular Nordic cuisine often found in Los Angeles in the 1950s and ’60s.

Lielle will be the more personal of the two concepts, with the other one opening on the second floor in the former home of Manzke. Fewer details regarding this concept have been shared, but it’s expected to open the tandem yet-to-be-named restaurant a few months after Lielle. While Jernmark has an incredible culinary background that includes leading the kitchen at Stockholm restaurant Frántzen, which received three Michelin stars and currently sits at the No. 6 position on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, he tells the Times that he doesn’t want to “overcomplicate things.”

“As much as I am still a curious person, I’m also 42,” Jernmark tells the Los Angeles Times. “I’m gonna cut out a lot of nonsense, a lot of things that I don’t necessarily think contribute to the overall experience: things that don’t make any sense when you cook for people in your house, the way you do it in your house. Let’s bring some of those components into the restaurant experience, because it’s really about nourishment and how to take care of people.”
