According to a recently submitted permit application, El Cerrito-based concept El Mono is opening a location in Berkeley.

Taking over a 1600-square-foot space at 1300 Fourth Street, the Peruvian restaurant will land near establishments such as Donkey & Goat Winery, Picante, and Trumer Taproom.

Owners Matt Khadivian and Daniela Diaz offer a brief introduction to the concept in a recent email to What Now San Francisco: “From South America to the Bay Area in one bite! El Mono is proud to offer fresh and authentic flavors of the mystical land of Peru!”

Drawing from the concept’s Facebook page, locals can expect the menu to offer items such as golden-fried green plantains served with zesty chimichurri sauce, fried cassava paired with zesty Rocoto chili aioli, and Aji de Gallina — a creamy stew of shredded chicken, Aji Amarillo chili, and Parmesan cheese served with potatoes and garlic jasmine rice.

Stay tuned for updates.
