According to The Patriot Ledger, the former site of Red Wing Diner, located on Route 1 in Walpole at 2235 Providence Hwy, is slated for a new eatery. After nearly a century in operation, Red Wing announced its closure for repairs via Facebook in September. However, shortly after, a “for sale” sign went up in front of the space.
In its place, Peter and Patricia Crowley will soon open a new barbecue joint called Blondie’s Barbecue. The Walpole Select Board unanimously approved the transfer of Red Wing’s alcohol license to the Crowleys’ new eatery on March 12. Additionally, the couple secured an entertainment license for TV and non-live music.
The Crowleys, who first met in culinary school, are no strangers to the restaurant scene. They are the masterminds behind Café G, an upscale seasonal café nestled in Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where it has flourished for over two decades. As the duo embarks on their latest venture with Blondie’s, Café G will continue its operations uninterrupted.
The sale of the former Red Wing Diner space is currently pending, with expectations for finalization by month’s end. Post-acquisition, the Crowleys plan an extensive remodel, including an interior redesign. This overhaul will involve replacing the existing bar area with an ordering counter, where patrons will place their orders before finding seating to await their food.
While specifics about the forthcoming menu remain undisclosed for now, patrons can look forward to an assortment of barbecue options at Blondie’s Barbecue.
