An organic sushi spot in Boston’s Theatre District has temporarily gone dark following an accident.

NBC10 Boston reports that Genkì Ya has shut its 232 Tremont Street doors after a crash on Friday, September 27, 2024. Witnesses reported that two vehicles collided at the intersection of Tremont and Stuart Streets, with one crashing into the restaurant’s front entrance.

Boston police confirmed that three pedestrians were hit by the vehicle. However, witnesses told NBC10 Boston that two pedestrians and the driver—who appeared to be having a seizure—were hurt. All three are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

While no one inside the restaurant was harmed, the eatery itself sustained considerable damage, including broken tiles, cracks, and shattered glass. Nick Cheung, whose family owns the restaurant, said, “It’s definitely going to hurt. Who knows when, but we’ll build from this.”

In an Instagram update addressing the accident, the Genkì Ya team shared, “A structural engineer has assessed the situation and determined that parts of the building will need repairs. We are currently evaluating the time required for the repairs.”

They expressed gratitude for the support from customers and wished the injured a speedy recovery, offering them a complimentary meal once they’ve healed.

While the Theatre District location is undergoing repairs, patrons are encouraged to visit the other Genkì Ya locations in Brookline, Cambridge, Dedham, and Somerville. In addition to a wide range of organic sushi rolls, the small chain offers various Japanese dishes, including udon noodles, platters, and soups.
