According to a recently submitted permit application, local chain Rios Barbacoa plans to renovate its S Zarzamora Street space — situated just down the street from Cleo’s Hair Salon, Michelle’s Pet Salon, and Taqueria Rello.

What Now San Antonio contacted the concept’s co-owner Joe Rios to inquire about the updates, but he could not provide additional information before publication.

Nevertheless, the filing discloses that improvements will include the construction of a “new 1,000-square-foot walk-up restaurant” and minor pavement work. For an estimated $200,000, the project will be carried out by Arlington-based firm Architecture Underground Inc. and is slated to begin on May 1 and be finished in March 2025.

For readers who are unfamiliar with Rios Barbacoa, the family-owned San Antonio restaurant chain operates around 20 outposts in the city and is known for its tacos, tamales, menudo, and chicharrones.

An opening date has not been announced yet, so follow Rios Barbacoa on Facebook for updates.
