Westside’s ‘create-your-own’ stir fry joint closes, plans relocation to Alpharetta.

The Real Chow Baby has closed its West Midtown doors, at 1016 Howell Mill Road.

The “create-your-own” stir fry joint posted a handwritten note on a brown paper bag outside the restaurant Saturday night.

“Chow Baby is closed,” according to the message. “Moving to Alpharetta.”

Chef Trey Jones, Chow Baby’s general manager, in a telephone interview Sunday confirmed with What Now Atlanta (WNA) the restaurant’s Westside location had shuttered with plans to relocate to Alpharetta.

Mike Blum, the restauranteur behind the stir fry joint, was not immediately available for comment.

  • That’s a shame. He should have closed the Ponce location – the layout of that restaurant is cramped and uncomfortable. The Howell Mill store was actually decent.

  • I’m impressed it lasted this long. I will say that I believe this restaurant fulfilled it’s mission (if only unofficially) to make West Midtown a dot on the map of intown Atlanta. It went from being one of the only restaurants on this side of town to being the least interesting restaurant on this side of town. When you look at the range of dining options within 1500 feet of the restaurant now, the change is palpable. I would also say that the Real Chow Baby actually felt a bit too suburban in scope in comparison to the new restaurants showing up in the neighborhood.

  • I agree with Westside. I don’t consider it a failure. When it opened, that was a pretty risky place to open a restaurant. It was basically a destination restaurant in an industrial area.

Whenever I went ,many moons ago, there would be long lines.

I can see it doing well in a more suburban area. The novelty kind of wears off after the second visit, though.
