Virginia-Highland cafe and market, moving. Space undergoing renovations for new concept.

Belly General Store in Virginia-Highland has closed its doors.

The cafe and market, at 772 N Highland Ave. NE, covered its windows with brown paper this week and announced the closure in a handwritten note on a piece of cardboard posted to Belly’s doors.

“Belly is moving,” according to the message. “Renovating inside, new business (food) coming soon.”

What Now Atlanta was unsuccessful in several attempts to reach Belly for comment. The cafe and market’s phone has been disconnected and its website taken offline, and might be available for sale.

  • Would be amazing to have a great deli/market there. Something like savi in Inman park or sawicki’s in Decatur. Think a place like that would be so popular in virginia highlands. A great bakery or wine bar would be cool too!

  • I doubt it can be anything with alcohol because the shop doesn’t have parking. The neighborhood needs a really good breakfast spot. But I’m not sure there is enough traffic to support one. Whatever goes in there, I hope they have better service and friendlier staff than Belly.

  • Amazing how Virginia-Highland has gone from the most desirable of urban neighborhoods to a sad shadow of its former self. There are many factors here – Park Atlanta, the fact that the neighborhood has gotten more settled, presumably high rents, a desire to limit nightlife, and just the general cycle of new neighborhoods gentrifying and taking Va-Hi’s slot.

  • Devastating. Belly has been a haven since I moved to Atlanta 5 years ago, sight unseen. So sad to see them go- and more upset I didn’t have a parting visit! I look forward to their hopeful return.
