The Gwinnett, Newton & Rockdale County Health Departments conducted health inspections at various restaurants in Metro Atlanta on March 19. Among the restaurants, there were two that received unsatisfactory scores after several food safety violations were reported.
Most of the cited violations were corrected on-site under inspector supervision. For the remaining unresolved issues, inspectors have set a deadline for correction.

Chung Dam

Health inspectors visited Chung Dam at Duluth for the Required Additional Routine inspection in the afternoon of Wednesday, March 19. They cited multiple food code violations at the establishment, resulting in a low inspection score. The full March 19 inspection report for Chung Dam has been released online.
The report begins by stating that the person in charge failed to demonstrate active managerial control over the facility. The person also lacked knowledge of the employee health policy and foodborne illness prevention, the report said.
Inspectors observed improper storage of raw meats and seafood over ready-to-eat foods, increasing the risk of cross-contamination. Various food items, including meats, seafood, tofu, and rice, were seen stored at unsafe temperatures. Also, unpackaged seafood and meats were seen stored in direct contact with water
Inspectors noted the presence of a can of Raid insect killer was found in the kitchen, which is not permitted under food safety regulations.. Inspectors also observed live insects in multiple areas of the kitchen. The report mentioned that the kitchen’s back door was not self-closing, which could allow pests to enter.
Best Wings

Officials from the GNR County Health Department conducted a follow-up inspection at Best Wings on March 19 after the restaurant received a low score in the Required Additional Routine inspection on March 10. The inspection report for Best Wings can be found online.
The report begins by stating that the person in charge failed to demonstrate active managerial control which led to multiple risk factor violations. The report also stated that employees had drinks in unapproved containers placed inside the kitchen.
An employee was seen not sanitizing bowls after washing and rinsing them. In regards to Equipment Cleanliness, grease and debris buildup were observed on the fryers, wok station, and ventilation system.
The report also noted that raw meats and eggs were stored above ready-to-eat foods in multiple coolers and freezers, which is not in compliance with food safety guidelines. Several time/temperature control foods were seen held above the safe limit of 41°F, the report said. Inspectors noted fries stored without required start and discard time labels.
The report also mentioned that the most recent health inspection report was not posted in public view.
Follow-up Inspections Scheduled
A follow-up inspection at Chung Dam in Duluth is scheduled within 10 days. Best Wings in Lawrenceville will face the follow-up inspection on or before March 28 as well. Failure to address these issues before the follow-up inspection may result in permit suspension, per health department guidelines. Moreover, third consecutive violations of the same food code can also lead to permit suspension.
The GNR County health department inspected a total of 29 restaurants on March 19. Six restaurants, among them, were successful in securing a perfect 100 in the inspection. Another 16 restaurants also fared well, scoring 90+ and securing “A” grade. Four restaurants got between 80 and 89 points and one scored 73 points.
