According to the concept’s owner, Mylapore Restaurant Group plans to debut two new Idly Express outposts in the Bay Area. These are in addition to the location coming to Lower Nob Hill, as reported on by What Now San Francisco last week.
“We have one coming to Santa Clara and one opening in Sunnyvale… The one that’s in Santa Clara is a drive-thru; we took over a Boston market,” Owner Jay Jayaraman tells What Now San Francisco. He adds, “We need to do some interior work. It doesn’t require any permitting, but we still need to get it done before opening.”
For readers who are unfamiliar with the concept, Jayaraman offers insight into how Idly Express came into existence, sharing, “We wanted to open something in the Bay Area… I asked myself, ‘What is it in my cuisine that I can offer?’”
“Idly is a steamed rice cake, considered the healthiest breakfast in the entire world,” he continues. “We launched in Milpitas in 2021… now we have four locations in the Bay Area.”
On the menu are different types of idly — a common breakfast dish in South India; a kind of steamed cake made from a fermented batter of lentils and rice, often served with chutney and sambhar — alongside sweet and salty snacks and beverages such as mango lassi and rose milk.
Concerning an opening date, he shares, “The inspectors are behind in all of the counties… we are thinking of opening the Sunnyvale location during the first week of July.”
Stay tuned for updates.
