Years of waiting came to an end for San Antonio as it welcomed Godfather’s Pizza on June 23. The iconic pizza chain, most cherished for its taco pizzas, evoked nostalgic sentiments in many fans on Monday. The freshly opened outlet is co-owned by Juan Cuellar and Levi Rodgers, CEO of the Levi Rodgers Real Estate Group.

The chain announced its opening day on Instagram with the caption, “Opening at: 11am to 9pm TODAY! We are at: 151/410 Look for The Flag!” Godfather’s Pizza has been teasing fans on social media about its approaching opening since December of last year, in which it shared a ‘Coming Soon’ poster.

Last year, the restaurant shared an update to its earlier post. “We’re thrilled to announce that our opening is set for mid to late May or early June!,” read the comment. The brand confirmed a soft opening as it expressed gratitude for the support of its loyal patrons.

Reaction from Patrons

The posts on Instagram and Facebook generated significant buzz and anticipation. The opening announcement was met with several heartwarming reactions on social media. Fans flooded social media with nostalgic memories after the return of the pizza chain. Many appeared in the comments to reminisce about childhood memories and family traditions associated with the pizza joint.

Restaurant History and Closure in 2016

Since its debut in the 1970s, Godfather’s enjoyed rising popularity until the 1980s, becoming one of America’s fastest-growing restaurant chains. During the late ’80s, increasing competition, declining revenues, and franchisee lawsuits forced many stores to shutter.

The result was the closure of hundreds of popular locations, including 20 in San Antonio. The final San Antonio area location opened at Lackland AFB in 2004 but closed in 2016.

Co-owner Rodgers was 14 years old when he landed his first job at Godfather’s in Sacramento in the early 1990s. He later became an assistant manager before pursuing a career in the Army.

The latest location opening is just the start of many more locations expected to launch across San Antonio. Rodgers plans to soon branch out into Austin and Killeen, approximately 70 miles north of ATX.
