The NYC Department of Transportation, in partnership with NYC Parks, has proposed a series of upgrades for Eastern Parkway. The proposed improvements focus on the stretch between Schenectady and Ralph Avenues and aim to meet ADA standards. Plans include upgrading bus stops, pedestrian ramps, and nearby public spaces to improve accessibility.
Highlights
- New and formalized bus stops and high-quality paving are proposed for the Eastern Parkway.
- City agencies are working together on the ADA-compliant redesign to enhance access across the parkway.
- To improve route efficiency, the stop at Rochester Avenue will be removed, and some green space may be repurposed.
ADA-Compliant Improvements Proposed for Eastern Parkway
The NYC Department of Transportation aims to make Eastern Parkway more accessible for all, including residents with disabilities. They have proposed upgrades for Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, keeping ADA compliance in view.
This collaborative project by NYC DOT and NYC Parks will also bring ADA ramps for better connectivity with northern pedestrian malls. Bus service along Eastern Parkway dates back to 1925, with several upgrades made over the decades. The latest proposal reflects modern accessibility standards and transit demands.
Locations and Materials for Upgrades
The upgrade project at Eastern Parkway will include work between Schenectady and Ralph Avenues. New bus stop areas are expected at Utica and Buffalo Avenues with ADA-compliant granite pavers.
New ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps connecting the northern malls, using hexagonal pavers and white detectable warning surfaces, are also included under the project scope. The existing informal B14 bus stop will be formalized, along with the addition of ADA stops. For better efficiency, a stop at Rochester Avenue will be discontinued.
Some of the green space may be reduced to accommodate granite pavers and create space for buses to drop off passengers. However, the southern malls’ green space will be consistent at 37%.
The upgrades honor Eastern Parkway’s historic design by Olmsted and Vaux while meeting today’s accessibility needs. The project aims to improve safety and accessibility for both commuters and local residents.
