According to a recently submitted permit application, a new family-owned Mexican food restaurant is coming to town, preparing to open in La Vernia in the autumn of 2026.

Coming to 13886 U.S. Hwy 87 W, the sit-down eatery — which is, by public records, listed as both Fernandez Mexican Restaurant and La Tapatia Mexican Restaurant — will soon be neighbor to establishments such as Anytime Fitness, Sonic Drive-In, and Taco Vallarta.

What Now San Antonio reached out to the concept’s owner, Eduardo Fernandez, to inquire about his plans for the upcoming diner; however, he could not provide additional information before the time of publication.

Nevertheless, the filing reveals that Fernandez intends to build a 5,047-square-foot, wood-framed restaurant over the next year, with construction slated to begin on October 13, 2025, and expected to be completed on October 12, 2026. The Floresville-based firm Lace Designs will oversee the project.

While waiting for Fernandez’s Mexican food restaurant to arrive in La Vernia, locals can enjoy a meal at recently opened businesses such as Farmhaus Table Bar & Grill, which took over the former Kicaster Spot, or Rabel’s Roadhaus BBQ — already well-known for its jalapeno creamed corn.

An opening date has not been announced yet. Follow What Now San Antonio on Facebook for updates on this story.
