Khan’s Mongolian BBQ, a new customizable stir-fry restaurant, is set to open at 3547 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach.

The new restaurant is set to make its debut in the former location of Mitake Poke & Sushi in the Bixby Plaza, according to LongBeachize. It’s unclear when the restaurant is expected to open, but customers can expect a build-your-own bowl experience centered on Mongolian-style barbecue, fresh ingredients, and bold flavors.

Khan’s Mongolian BBQ is the latest venture from Johnny Chhom, a Cambodian-American entrepreneur who has been steadily expanding his footprint in Long Beach’s food scene. Chhom is best known for founding Sweet Grass Sugarcane Juice, located next door at 3545 Atlantic Ave., which opened its brick-and-mortar storefront in 2021. The juice bar specializes in cold-pressed sugarcane drinks made with tropical fruits and Thai coconuts, offering vegan and gluten-free options with Southeast Asian influence.

Before opening the storefront, Chhom began selling sugarcane juice out of his apartment in 2020 after being laid off from a corporate job. He built a following through local deliveries, pop-ups, and appearances at events like Smorgasburg. His success led to the purchase of a food truck, which helped expand Sweet Grass’s reach before the business landed in its current location in Bixby Knolls.

Chhom has built his businesses with a focus on accessibility, clean branding, and cultural roots. Sweet Grass features over a dozen menu items and a modern design that appeals to Long Beach’s health-conscious and design-savvy crowd. Khan’s Mongolian BBQ will continue that approach with a fast-casual format and a menu that allows customers to select proteins, vegetables, and sauces to be cooked on a large grill.

This marks Chhom’s first step into hot food service and a new way for him to bring fresh, flavorful dining options to the Atlantic Avenue area.
