The east side of Hawthorne may soon have an option for both national and international wines.

The owner of Firefly Wine Room recently submitted a liquor license application for 4538 SE Hawthorne Boulevard. This is a vacant space at the corner of SE 46th Avenue. According to owner Arthur Prospero, he is hoping to open sometime in October if all goes well with city inspections.

Prospero and his business partner hail from California, and being in the Portland area they have grown a sense of familiarity with the neighborhoods, particularly Hawthorne. The two found the space that was previously owned by a winery, and they knew this would be the perfect spot for their new wine bar concept.

“We really love the neighborhood,” Prospero told What Now Portland.

Right now, work is being done on the interior to give the space an “elegant” look. The wine imports will be both national and international, showcasing local Oregon and California wines, as well as French and Italian bottles. Prospero said the new location will also be serving food, like small bites and cheeses from the California Bay area.

The listed hours of operation will be 6-10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 5-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m.-midnight on Saturday and 3-9 p.m. on Sunday. In the application, there is also live music scheduled, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday.

The wine bar is going in right next to The Whole Bowl vegetarian restaurant and across the street from Khao Thai. It is just east of the center of the Hawthorne neighborhood.
