Schmidt Family Barbecue, a longtime Austin-area favorite, will serve its last plates on October 4, 2025, after 12 years in operation. The Schmidt family’s barbecue tradition in Lockhart dates back multiple generations
Though the business has been running for decades, the Bee Cave location opened in 2013. The Bee Cave shop was the newest addition to the family’s storied Texas barbecue portfolio.
The farewell celebrations will start at 4 p.m. at their Bee Cave location with live music and fun, ending their beautiful journey on a sweet note.
Chad Franks’ Retirement Leads To The Bee Cave Outlet Closure
In an Instagram post, the team confirmed the Bee Cave location will close on October 4 after 12 years. The post explained that operator Chad Franks is retiring from the business to spend more time with his family and support his daughter’s rodeo career.
Through their announcement, they said, “After 12 amazing years, Schmidt Family Barbecue in Bee Cave will be closing on October 4th. We’re so grateful for your support and the memories we’ve made together. Chad is retiring from BBQ to focus on family and his role as a full-time rodeo dad to our daughter. Join us for a farewell celebration on October 4th, starting at 4 p.m., with live music on our last day!

They encouraged fans to visit the family’s other spots, including Smitty’s Market and Kreuz Market in Lockhart and Lockhart Smokehouse in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
