Matcha Haus, a Toronto-based matcha cafe known for its ethically sourced green tea beverages, is getting ready to open a second location in Leslieville at 890 Queen Street East.
The company’s second location will share space with Bar Bokeh, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar that will operate during evening hours, according to BlogTO. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, Matcha Haus is expected to open sometime in November, with Bar Bokeh launching at a later date. During the day, customers can expect a full menu of matcha-forward drinks featuring seasonal flavors like pistachio and pumpkin spice.
Founded by Angela Yan, Matcha Haus first opened its doors at 324 Bathurst Street in downtown Toronto. The cafe has built a following for its “farm to cup” approach, sourcing first-harvest matcha directly from Japanese tea farmers to ensure sustainable and ethical practices. The new dual-concept space reflects a growing cultural trend in Toronto, where both matcha cafes and speakeasies continue to rise in popularity.
Matcha Haus emphasizes eco-conscious values, avoiding synthetic pesticides and focusing on natural cultivation methods. The company’s dedication to sustainability extends to its collaborative work with Chef Haruna Makino, a Japanese vegan chef who helped develop the menu using wholesome ingredients and traditional techniques.
The Leslieville location will function as a cafe by day, offering a lineup of handcrafted matcha lattes and wellness drinks. In the evening, the back portion of the venue will transform into Bar Bokeh, a separate cocktail-focused speakeasy. The combined space aims to attract both daytime cafe-goers and nighttime patrons seeking a hidden bar experience.
