Philz Coffee, the California-based coffee chain known for customized brewed-to-order blends, has submitted documents for a potential new location in Downtown San Diego at 825 Harbor Drive.

The proposed site will likely be part of either Seaport Village or the upcoming Research and Development District, or RaDD, depending on whether the site is for 825 N. Harbor or W. Harbor Drive, according to documents submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. While the filing does not necessarily indicate that Philz will open here, it proves the company’s interest in expanding into the area. If finalized, this would be Philz Coffee’s fourth location in San Diego, joining existing stores in Del Mar, Encinitas, and La Jolla.

Founded in 1978 by Phil Jaber, who spent decades experimenting and perfecting coffee blends, Philz Coffee opened its first shop in San Francisco’s Mission District on January 1, 2003. The brand has since grown nationally, with locations across California and Chicago, earning a reputation for carefully sourced beans, skillful roasting, and a focus on community engagement. The company emphasizes creating “Better Days for everyone, every day” through coffee and customer interactions, according to its website.

Philz Coffee specializes in individually brewed blends made from sustainably sourced green beans roasted at their Oakland facility. Guests can expect a highly customizable experience with a range of coffee profiles and warm, personalized service. The company emphasizes quality, community, and care in every interaction.

The RaDD project, a $1.9 billion redevelopment spanning six city blocks along San Diego’s waterfront, is attracting several well-known food and beverage brands. Other filings include Board & Brew and Le Shrimp Noodle Bar. The district is shaping up as a hub for new dining options, making it a logical target for Philz if they move forward.

If the Downtown San Diego location comes to fruition, it would bring Philz’s signature coffee experience to a growing commercial and residential hub, complementing existing stores in the greater San Diego area and offering convenient access for downtown workers, residents, and visitors.
