South of Nick’s Mexican Kitchen + Bar, a Southern California restaurant known for its polished take on Mexican cuisine, is getting ready to open in Long Beach at 5354 E. 2nd Street.
The restaurant’s fourth location is set to open in the historic Spanish Colonial Revival building, which recently underwent a full restoration, according to the Los Angeles Times. While an exact opening date has not been announced, the restaurant will occupy roughly 5,700 square feet on the ground floor, with the space approved by the Long Beach Cultural Heritage Commission for adaptive reuse as a restaurant. Guests can expect South of Nick’s familiar mix of Mexican dishes, cocktails, and approachable dining once the doors open.
South of Nick’s is part of NickCo Hospitality Group, which operates restaurants in Laguna Beach, San Clemente, San Diego, and Del Mar. The Belmont Shore location will be the company’s second restaurant on 2nd Street, following Nick’s on 2nd Long Beach at 4901 2nd St. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, focused menu, and consistent hospitality, the brand aims to deliver a dining experience centered on reliable service and high-quality food.
The restaurant’s menu features appetizers such as guacamole, ceviche, taquitos, queso fundido, and birria empanadas. The lineup continues with house plates that include tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and carnitas. Guests will also find a selection of grilled specialties ranging from prime cuts to fajita-style offerings. Seafood dishes include enchiladas, sea bass, lobster, prawns, and fish tacos, along with salads, soups, and combination plates for added variety.
The two-story building, originally constructed in 1929, has been restored to preserve its historic architectural character while supporting modern commercial use, with South of Nick’s set to open on the ground floor and KAL Capital Markets preparing to occupy the second level. The restored building and new tenants make this a great addition to 2nd Street and a perfect new home for South of Nick’s.
