Earlier this year, What Now Boston reported that acclaimed chef George Mendes had parted ways with Portuguese fine-dining restaurant Amar, teasing plans for a new, independent concept in Boston’s South End. Now, details about Agosto have been revealed.
According to Boston Magazine, the new restaurant will occupy a former dry cleaner’s space at 1679 Washington St. The intimate, 45-seat venue will center around a chef’s counter with a tasting menu, with an additional à la carte menu served in the bar area.
In collaboration with his wife Suzanne, George—who previously ran the Michelin-starred Aldea in New York City—will highlight his Portuguese roots while incorporating global influences, from French technique and Spanish creativity to minimalist Japanese-inspired flavors, all featuring local New England seafood and sustainably sourced farm-to-table ingredients.
“Agosto (August in Portuguese) is the month I met and later married my wife,” George explained in an Instagram post announcing the news. “It’s also our son’s name. Beyond our family, the word carries a feeling I love: ease, slowing down, and connection – what I hope guests feel when they dine with us.”
Slated to open around summer 2026, Agosto will open alongside Baby Sister, a playful bakery-café next door, offering breads, pastries, and casual fare. Together, the two concepts reflect George’s vision of pairing intimate fine dining with approachable, community-focused experiences.
