Chef George Mendes is expanding his South End plans with a second, more casual concept. Alongside his upcoming tasting-menu restaurant Agosto, Mendes will introduce Baby Sister, a chef-driven bakery-café located right next door at 1673 Washington Street.

The eatery will focus on approachable, high-quality café fare with a spirited and slightly irreverent personality. Guests can look forward to a variety of house-baked breads and pastries, including Portuguese classics like pastéis de nata (egg tarts), sourdough loaves, baguettes, breakfast sandwiches, and light lunch options, with select items available into the early evening.

“The café won’t take itself too seriously, even though the food’s seriously good,” Suzanne Mendes, George’s wife and business partner, told Boston Magazine. The name is a nod to their daughter and to the playful energy of a younger sibling who keeps everyone on their toes.

Baby Sister will complement Agosto, offering a more relaxed, approachable counterpart to the tasting-menu restaurant next door. Slated to open after Agosto in 2026, the couple views the bakery-café as a way to give back to the South End community that warmly welcomed their family in 2023.
