2025 brought a wave of bankruptcy filings across California, affecting businesses in industries ranging from real estate to food service. The filings spanned diverse sectors, including luxury homebuilding, skincare, pizza chains, and healthcare, as rising debt and financial pressures mounted.

11 California Companies That Filed for Bankruptcy in 2025

Eleven companies, including Rizo-Lopez Foods, Brooke Rodd Designs, LLC, Savi Construction, LLC, and others, filed bankruptcy this year. The roundup outlines reasons for the filings, with rising debts being a common factor across industries. Further details, including the current state of the California businesses, are discussed here:

1. Try Trout and Industrial, LLC

The Truckee-based real estate holding company filed for bankruptcy as it seeks to reorganize its operations. Under Chapter 11, Try Trout and Industrial, LLC planned to continue working as Try Trout and Industrial, LLC.​

As per the court filings, the real estate company expected to have funds to pay nearly 49 unsecured creditors. The petition by Try Trout and Industrial, LLC listed assets between $50 million and $100 million and liabilities between $10 million and $50 million.

​The case stays active for the real estate business in the bankruptcy case as attorney William M. Noall represents Try Trout and Industrial, LLC.​

2. Rizo-Lopez Foods

Nearly a year after the FDA paused its production, Rizo-Lopez Foods stepped into bankruptcy proceedings.

Rizo-Lopez Foods submitted a bankruptcy petition in September this year to start afresh by restructuring its finances and developing a reorganization plan. Court filings show the dairy producer listed between 50 and 99 creditors. Total assets were listed between $10,000,001 and $50 million, whereas liabilities were somewhere between $50,000,001 and $100 million.

​The case stays active for Rizo-Lopez Foods with a hearing for an order authorizing post-petition debtor-in-possession financing. The hearing is scheduled for December 30, 2025.

​Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. has been offering Mexican-style cheeses and creams for more than 30 years. Based in Modesto, California, the family business yearly sells around 15 million pounds of cheese.​

3. Hudson 1702, LLC

The company from Carson delivers port operations, warehousing, and drayage for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. As of now, it handles more than 100 trucks and 400 chassis.

5. Brooke Rodd Designs, LLC

​The assets of Brooke Rodd Designs, LLC, as shown in the court filings, were listed between $100,000 and $500,000. Whereas, the liabilities of the lifestyle and fashion retail business were somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million. The Santa Monica retailer owed roughly 49 creditors in total.

​As of now, the Chapter 11 case continues for Brooke Rodd Designs, LLC in the court.​

Owned by designer Brooke Rodd, the retail business was a result of her cross-country move and a reality TV show win. Rodd had earlier worked in the photography and music industries.

6. Valley of the Sun Cosmetics, LLC

This skincare and haircare business filed for Chapter 11 to restructure debts while operating as normal during the bankruptcy.

​The California-based business offers personal care items, such as hair care products, cosmetics, vitamins, and natural skin care products. Some of the brands under Valley of the Sun Cosmetics include Hollywood Style, Mochi Smooshi, Bee Organic, Spanish Garden, and Romeo Juliet.​

7. Savi Construction, LLC

Savi Construction, LLC decided to proceed with a Chapter 11 bankruptcy to clear off its rising debts through a restructuring plan. The general contractor from California submitted a voluntary petition under Subchapter V to initiate the proceedings.

​As per the filing details, Savi Construction, LLC had both assets and liabilities in the range of $100,001 to $1,000,000. The California-based business had submitted a list of the 20 largest unsecured creditors as well.​

8. Sky-Frame, Inc.

The luxury glass making company voluntarily filed for bankruptcy to restructure its growing debts. Fluctuating revenues over the past three years, large trade credit claims, and multiple legal disputes were other issues that led to the Chapter 11 filing by Sky-Frame, Inc.

​The petition of the L.A.-based building solutions company mentioned to have roughly $6.1 million in personal property assets and $9.16 million in liabilities. Sky-Frame’s petition further listed cash on hand, inventory, and equipment among its assets, along with several leases.

​The case continues for Sky-Frame, Inc. in the bankruptcy proceedings under Subchapter V. A creditors’ meeting will take place on December 29 at 9:00 AM via telephone.

​Sky-Frame, Inc. designs and manufactures frameless sliding windows and doors. Its specialization is in high-precision glass and glazing systems. Inclined glass panels, flush indoor-outdoor transitions, frameless sliding systems, and pivot doors are some of the offerings of the California business.​

9. Pieology

​Attorney Belinda M. Vega of Venable LLP submitted a motion for joint administration on behalf of the pizza restaurant chain. This hinted at another bankruptcy filing, possibly by an affiliate or subsidiary of The Little Brown Box Pizza, LLC.

​Pieology’s Chapter 11 case continues as the bankruptcy court granted its application for shortened notice, with a hearing scheduled for January 6, 2026.​

Founded in 2011 by Carl Chang, the popular pizza restaurant chain currently operates in Canada, China, Mexico, Spain, and the U.K. Patrons often stop by the California-based pizza spot for individual, artisan-style ‘build your own’ pizzas.

10. Oroville Hospital

​The California-based company sought to use a court-supervised transaction with a partner having the necessary resources and operating experience to invest in the hospital. Along with this, the community hospital aimed to maintain its mission for the stakeholders’ benefit.

​Oroville Hospital continues to appear in the bankruptcy case as the proceedings continue in the court.

​The community hospital serves Butte County patients and those from nearby places with personalized health care. Oroville Hospital’s services cover childbirth, cancer treatment, orthopedic surgery, and primary care.

11. Howard’s Appliances, Inc.

Howard’s Appliances initiated Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month. The decision came days after the 80-year-old appliance retailer had shuttered its Southern California stores on December 6.

Howard’s Appliances, Inc. is still meeting the court requirements in the active bankruptcy case.

​Founded in 1946, the retailer provides appliances, TVs, mattresses, and other products across Southern California. Interior designers, industry professionals, and homeowners are some of the customer groups of Howard’s Appliances.

​These 11 bankruptcies reflect a common aspect of growing financial strain for California-based businesses. As the cases are still active, the coming months will determine if the reorganization goals are met or the businesses face liquidation.
