GameStop, the Texas-based video game, consumer electronics, and gaming merchandise retailer is closing around 500 of its brick-and-mortar outlets across the country. The closures are part of a broader effort to streamline operations as consumer shopping habits continue to shift. It is a significant move by the brand that will impact its financial situation.
Hundreds of GameStop Stores Slated to Close Across the U.S.
GameStop is based in Grapevine, Texas, founded in 1984. The retailer sells new and used video games, consoles, accessories, collectibles, and pop culture merchandise through both physical stores and its online platform. GameStop also has digital content, trade-in programs, and omnichannel shopping experiences.
Recent report by WKYC suggest GameStop plans to shutter roughly 470 stores across dozens of states beginning in January 2026. Local reports from states including New York and Maryland confirm that hundreds of locations are set to close.
The announcement follows a December filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in which GameStop said that it would close a large number of stores before the end of its current fiscal year on January 31, 2026.
Ongoing Closures
Industry observers say the closures are affecting both major metro areas and smaller communities. Some closures are already underway, with more expected in the coming months.
Last year, the company shut down more than 500 U.S. locations as part of a broader cost-cutting and restructuring effort.
