Bedda, a new all-day Italian dining concept, is getting ready to open in San Diego’s South Park at 3015 Juniper Street.
The restaurant will take over the former home of Matteo bakery, which opened in early 2020 and closed permanently in December 2025 after nearly five years. Bedda is led by Angela Catania, who also owns Carbon Angela’s Kitchen. Catania tells What Now San Diego that she hopes to open the concept in the second half of February, although an exact opening date could not be provided. Customers can expect daytime brunch and lunch service, plus an evening tapas-style bar serving small plates, wine-based cocktails, and beer.
Bedda’s daytime menu will feature pastries, cookies, gelato, grab-and-go items, focaccia sandwiches, charcuterie, and a deli component. In the evening, the menu shifts to hot and cold tapas plates designed for sharing, complemented by vermouth-forward cocktails, sangria, and wine. Reservations will be introduced once operations are fully settled, offering flexibility for both casual and planned visits.
The concept’s name, “Bedda,” comes from the Sicilian word for beautiful. It carries personal meaning for Catania, as her children used the word to refer to her. The restaurant is designed to be a neighborhood gathering place, welcoming and accessible rather than exclusive. Its location in South Park places it within a tight-knit community known for walkable streets and local dining destinations.
The restaurant’s design will balance casual daytime dining with a more social, tapas-style evening atmosphere. By combining a broad range of Italian offerings across multiple dayparts, Bedda positions itself as a flexible dining option for South Park residents and visitors alike.
“Today I begin a new chapter with a full heart,” Catania said on Instagram. “I am deeply grateful to Matteo for trusting me with his restaurant and for the opportunity to step into a space built with care, dedication, and history. This space has always been more than just a restaurant. It is a place that has given so much to the community. A place where people have gathered, shared meals, created memories, and felt a true sense of belonging. Stepping into this role is an honor, and I am committed to respecting its story while bringing new energy, consistency, and love, so this space can continue to serve the community it welcomes. Everything I do is rooted in intention. For my kids, for this space, and for the community that has supported it over the years. My promise is simple. To serve honest, comforting food and create a welcoming space where everyone belongs. Thank you for being part of this next chapter. I look forward to cooking for you, serving you, and growing together.”
