Sunrise Taquitos, a popular breakfast taco spot on Memorial Drive, announced its closure. The long-running local favorite is shutting down as the lease could not be renewed. The owners are searching for a new spot, while their two other locations stay open.
Sunrise Taquitos Memorial Location to Close After Lease End
Sunrise Taquitos at 5601 Memorial Drive has served the community for 20 years. The restaurant is permanently closing this location, surprising its regular diners.
Family-owned and known for making tortillas and breakfast tacos on-site, Sunrise Taquitos has operated from a gas station, becoming a staple for local commuters and residents.
The gas station owners are in the process of renovating their property, and therefore, the restaurant’s lease was not renewed, reported Chron. High rent and a lease end are compelling Sunrise Taquitos to terminate operations in the next few weeks, as announced on Tuesday.
In the closure announcement, the team thanked the community and said they are looking to reopen elsewhere soon. The post read, “This is not goodbye, it’s a transition. With the vision to relocate, we are actively exploring a new space where we can continue serving you with the same warmth, flavor, and Sunrise Taquitos spirit you’ve always known.” The restaurant remains open in its current locations in Spring and Copperfield.

About Sunrise Taquitos and Brand Resilience
Sunrise Taquitos was founded with a focus on traditional, handmade cuisine inspired by the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio.
The menu features fresh tortillas with fillings of chorizo, bacon, egg, picadillo, and carne guisada. Customers have numerous varieties of breakfast tacos to choose from with fresh salsas and handmade sides.
The business also caters to special events. The catering services also continue the cultural tradition of attention to detail and quality.
The Torres family has been involved in the food industry in Houston, besides Sunrise Taquitos. The links of Jacob Torres to the local food scene highlight a multi-generational loyalty to local Mexican food and community engagement in the region.
Despite financial challenges and shifts in the local market, Sunrise Taquitos has stayed strong, maintaining loyal customers and steady operations.
The Memorial Drive storefront may close soon, but Sunrise Taquitos’ story in Houston continues. The brand shifts focus to its remaining location. It is another example of how long-standing local businesses continue to adapt within Houston’s evolving dining landscape.
