Chef Mike Behrend took to social media on March 24 to announce the closure of his restaurant, Green Vegetarian Cuisine. The restaurant at Alamo Quarry Market will serve customers through April 17, 2026. The chef cited various industry challenges for the closure decision.
Green Vegetarian Cuisine to Close in San Antonio
Green Vegetarian Cuisine at 255 E Basse Rd, San Antonio, is closing after 19 years of operation. Over the years, the restaurant introduced many San Antonio diners to flavorful plant-based dishes. In the closure announcement, Behrend said, “Our hope is that we have made a positive impact in San Antonio.”
The chef called the last few years “brutal,” citing rising costs and a change in consumer behavior. Despite the efforts to keep the restaurant running, these factors made it difficult for the business to sustain.
About the Restaurant

Green Vegetarian Cuisine was founded in 2007 in the Five Points area of San Antonio. The restaurant then expanded to Alamo Quarry Market and the Alon Town Centre. Currently, only the Alamo Quarry Market is operational.
Green is known for its plant-based versions of traditional foods. The menu features truffle parmesan fries, fried pickles, avocado toast, and other plant-based comfort foods. The restaurant became a local favorite over the years for vegetarian and vegan diners seeking hearty, Southern-style meals.
In the final days, Green Vegetarian Cuisine will operate during regular hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Community support also plays an important role in the restaurant’s final journey, as the chef mentioned, “Your support in the next few weeks will be greatly appreciated.”
